Francesco Molinari has been named the European Tour’s Golfer of the Year following his historic season that saw him become the first Italian to win the Open and the first European to win five points out of five at the Ryder Cup.

It was also a year that saw Tommy Fleetwood shoot 63 to equal the lowest score witnessed at a US Open, Oli Fisher record the tour’s first 59 and another member, Patrick Reed, win the Masters.

But there was only one man in line to win the award following a stunning campaign that also saw the 36-year-old from Turin win the tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
