Team Europe were shown a spine-tingling motivational video on the eve of the Ryder Cup which told them: ‘It’s not just about taking part. It’s about winning. Nothing else.’

Three of captain Thomas Bjorn’s predecessors in the role, Brian Huggett, Sam Torrance and Jose Maria Olazabal, delivered a series of messages designed to fire up the Europeans – and it seemed to do the job as they beat the United States comprehensively in Paris.

Eighty-one-year-old Huggett, who played in the event six times and was captain in 1977, started by saying: ‘As you get older things get taken away from you and that’s part of life. You learn to treasure the opportunities you’ve had and reflect on those moments that have defined you, both good and bad.’
