No-one knows a great deal about the under-used Bellerive Country Club course that hosts this week’s 100th USPGA Championship, not even Tiger Woods who admits he hasn’t set foot there in 17 years, when the tournament was cancelled due to 9/11.
But there are few greater strategists than Woods, and his pre-tournament analysis is usually spot on.
‘Right now it doesn’t really favour anyone because it’s playing so soft,’ said Woods this week of the ‘Green Monster of Ladue’, a long par-70 stretching to all of 7,547 yards. ‘If anything, it favours a guy who hits the ball high because we’re not going to get any run, it’s not going to dry out the rest of the week.
