Graeme McDowell on the 18th tee during the pro-am prior to the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open

…but X-factor is still missing for former major winner

  • Graeme McDowell was left in limbo after his golf bag failed to arrive from a flight
  • His bag included the putter he used to sink the winning putt at the 2010 US Open
  • But the power of social media saw Air France pull out all the stops to find them
  • He will try to rekindle his major-winning form an hour from where he grew up

Imagine a snooker player losing his favourite cue or a precious violin prised from the gilded fingers of its illustrious owner and you get some idea of the rising sense of panic engulfing Graeme McDowell on Monday evening.

In his golf bag that had disappeared into the ether at Charles de Gaulle airport was the putter with which he won the US Open in 2010 and sank the winning putt at the Ryder Cup the same year. There were also irons a few years old that are not manufactured any more.

To put it mildly, it was hardly the scenario he was looking for going into two events that offer him his best opportunity to revive his career.
