In the preamble to the Houston Open, Jordan Spieth declared he was looking for a 64 or 65 to fire him up for the Masters next week. It certainly did not happen on Thursday.
But an encouraging finish of three straight birdies did rescue a four-under par 68 from the clutches of something far more prosaic, and left him in a positive mood.
‘I’ve been working very hard and started to see some reward,’ said the 24-year-old. ‘It was a 68 that felt more like a 66 to me, given how I struck the ball.’
